Garnet Challice Obituary

CHALLICE, Garnet Frederick

Passed away peacefully at home in the company of his loving family on Friday, February 4th, 2022 at the age of 71. Garnet is survived by his beloved wife Sherlene (nee Hawkins) for 48 years, his son Matthew (wife Cheryl, children Aidyn, Izaak & Gavin), daughter Laura Tighe (husband Philip, children Charlie & Maisie), sisters Wanda Hooey and Norma Sanders (Robert). Predeceased by his parents Harvey and Dorothy (nee Armstrong) and by his sister Marguerite. Fondly remembered by his in-laws, the Hawkins family, close friends, neighbours, and his community in Millbrook. Garnet was proud, selfless, caring, and always the most positive person in the room. Everyone that knew him understood how special he was, and we were all blessed to have him in our lives. He was the type of person who could lighten a mood with his stories, sense of humour, playfulness, mischievous smile, and twinkly eyes. He had no problem talking to strangers for hours, which served him well in his long-time career as a UPS courier. People lit up when they saw his brown truck headed towards them. He was genuinely interested in others’ stories, ideas, and endeavours. Customers lined up at the Peterborough Farmers Market where he was a long-time vendor to chat and get trade secrets on his healthy plants and herbs. He was an expert gardener, which was evident when you saw his harvest. People came from long distances to purchase and photograph the assortment on his table, including the well-known mountain of carrots he strategically placed on the corner. This was just one of his quirky ways of being entrepreneurial. He had unique ways for solving problems and adapting to life situations and some of them even worked, those that didn’t made good stories. Garnet was a hard worker all of his life, but he also knew how to relax, especially when there was a fishing pole in his hands. Fish would jump onto his line before anyone else’s because they knew how special he was too. Fish on Garnet (Dad), we will see you on the flip side! Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be planned in the coming months. In memory of Garnet, donations can be made to the ALS Society.
