Ray Stewart Porteous

On May 28, 2023 in his 79th year, as the sun was rising, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Ray Stewart Porteous of Cavan, Ontario, passed peacefully into rest with his family by his side. Ray is survived by Carolyn, his wife of 56 years, and daughters Deborah (Craig) Borotsik and Tracy (Greg) Adams. Ray was the proud grandfather of Zachary (Lyndsay), Spencer (Mirela), Katie (Troy), Nicky (Michael) and Hannah, and the special great grandfather of Beau, plus one on the way. Predeceased by his parents Carl Frederick Porteous and Iva Annetta Lillian Porteous (nee Smith).

Like all things in life, Ray faced his diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia head on with courage, bravery and optimism. Special thanks to Dr. Sharif of the PRHC, Dr. Yee of Princess Margaret and the wonderful and compassionate nurses at PRHC Cancer Clinic and Transfusion Centre. The family also thanks the doctors and nurses on 3B and in the emergency department – your kindness and compassion helped us all through this difficult time.

A retiree from Canadian General Electric, Ray maintained lifelong friendships with his colleagues, meeting every month for lunch at Jeff Purveys - one of his favorite restaurants. After his first retirement, Ray was fortunate to continue his lifelong passion for farming through a second career working with our close neighbours and friends, the Suurds.  

One of Ray’s greatest accomplishments was his active service with the Millbrook and District Lions club, where he formed lasting friendships and was able to give back to the community that he had lived and worked in his entire life. 

Many of Ray’s friends reached out with support and help during this last year –from dropping by to check in, calling, and helping around the farm – please know that your kindness was very appreciated by Ray and family.

A private family service will be on Saturday, June 3rd and a Celebration of Life will be announced in the near future.
